In a world where differently-abled individuals often face significant challenges, the Tamil Nadu Paralympics Federation stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. This dedicated organization works tirelessly to integrate the Paralympics into society and enhance the lives of those with disabilities. Particularly in Tamil Nadu, many parents of disabled children live in constant worry about who will care for their children once they are gone. This anxiety is even more pronounced for female disabled individuals who face additional societal hurdles.
Addressing this critical issue, the Federation established “Our Mother’s Home” in Sivagangai, a sanctuary created by and for disabled people. The cornerstone of this initiative is THHAI ILLAM, a vocational training center offering lifelong accommodation, food, clothing, and care to mentally ill, differently-abled individuals who have been abandoned by society, lost their parents, or whose parents can no longer care for them.
Currently, 43 residents benefit from the compassionate environment of THHAI ILLAM. Over the past decade, this center has empowered over 1,000 differently-abled individuals through awareness programs, government concessions, and various schemes. Here, residents are not only cared for but are also encouraged to learn and engage in suitable jobs, fostering a sense of independence and dignity.
